Newborn Care
Each day in Cambodia thirty newborn babies die. The newborn period (when babies are less than one month old) is one of the most dangerous times in life. Yet simple and very low-cost interventions can prevent at least two-thirds of these deaths.
This issue of Health Messenger gives advice on some interventions that can be introduced easily at health centre and community level. It talks the reader through the vital first hours after birth when the right care and treatment can mean the difference between life and death. There are special sections on the care of low birth weight babies and a chapter on traditional mother and newborn care practices in Cambodia, some of which harm rather than help the newborn baby.
With detailed information on common problems found in newborns and advice on how to deal with and treat them, this magazine is vital for anyone involved in newborn care.
Multitopic section: Articles on Breastfeeding, Child Immunization, Mother and Child Health in Cambodia and the Contraceptive Pill.
